- In Turkey, we are primarily associated with Adam Mickiewicz, who died in Istanbul – and has his own museum there.
- In Poland, we knew and still know many wonderful Turks – from athletes, through cultural figures, to the Turkish culinary community (yes, that kebab). And yet we also have our Polish Tatars, living in places like Bohoniki and Kruszyniany – a community combining the cultures, cuisines, and traditions of Europe and the Orient. Perfect proof that diversity always enriches.
And speaking of Turkish… the Pole who became Murad Pasha:
- Speaking of Turkish translations – few nations can boast that their general… ended his life as a Turkish pasha. Yes, we’re talking about Józef Bem, our national hero, who, after turbulent years of fighting in Poland and Hungary, found himself in the Ottoman Empire, converted to Islam, took the name Murad Pasha, and served the sultan as a military commander. - He spent his final years serving the Ottoman state and died in Aleppo, which in 1850 was within the borders of that empire. This is beautiful proof that Poles and Turks can communicate—even at such a high level as General Pasha. Needless to say, Józef Bem did more for Polish-Turkish relations than many foreign ministers.
